People like to compare Classic Who and Blake’s 7, and that makes sense because they’re made of exactly the same things. But this is how you compare Classic Who and Blake’s 7.
Say you’ve got a sculpture. It’s not made out of the most expensive materials, but you put a lot of skill and effort into it and you made this honestly pretty cool sculpture of a big thumbs up.
That’s Classic Who.
Now you take that sculpture, and you hit it with a hammer. You break it into little pieces, and then you take all the pieces and glue them back together. And you do an even better job than last time because now it’s YOUR sculpture and yours alone, but still everybody’s gonna see where you glued it back together. And you make it into a surprisingly excellent and lifelike sculpture of that same hand from before, but this time with its middle finger up.
That’s Blake’s 7.
…and I suppose, to round out the triumvirate, next door your buddies are going like “nah, that’s not a hand” and decide to make their own, much better sculpture, using no materials at all. Like. Actually no materials. But the background music is so good that you have to admit that, even though you can’t quite tell what the hand is doing, it is definitely a much better sculpture. And also your friends are terrifying.
Aaaaand that’s Sapphire and Steel.
